Rebekah's Sointula House Residency

We are currently administering our friend Rebekah Pesicka's new residency in Sointula: The Sointula House Residency. This residency takes place in a 3 bedroom, 3 story, 2800 square foot house built in 1920, located just feet from the ocean. It is 3 blocks from the ferry, co-op, and village centre. There is also a large boathouse space on the property containing a shop as well as gallery space.

* please note, the house is heated by a wood stove, so artists need to be comfortable operating a wood stove to stay here. Additionally, artists staying here should be comfortable using the steep stairways separating the floors of the house.

About the Sointula House Residency

The Sointula House has two options: you can apply for the whole house for the cost of $1800/month, or you can apply to share the house at a cost of $900 for 1 room for a month. Two-week residencies can be available for $500/room for two weeks, or $1000/whole house for two weeks.

The Top Floor

The main bedroom is on the top floor and has a queen bed and a large round window that overlooks the beach. A children’s bedroom is across from the main bedroom. It has two built in single beds and overlooks the yard. A foyer with a large desk is between the two rooms

The Main Floor

A large living room overlooking the ocean, a kitchen with a beautiful double oven range and all appliances, a partial bathroom, a dining room and a studio sun room with work space throughout the level.

The Ground Floor

A beautiful full bathroom with a six foot cast iron tub and a walk in shower that faces the ocean. One bedroom with a queen size bed facing the ocean. An open concept area with a couch by a large wood stove, a washer\dryer and a utility counter work area with a sink.

Outside

There is a 12x45 foot deck between the front of the house and the beach that is suitable for plein air work and can have an outdoor easel set up.

The beautifully landscaped yard is semi private and fully fenced so suitable for pets or small children. It is great for outdoor projects as well.

 The Boathouse Gallery

The Shop is a restored Boathouse that fishing boats were built in. It is uninsulated and use is weather dependent for warmth. It has a huge set of doors that open onto the beach and many cultural treasures for inspiration. It has a large spacious floor work space. April to October are usually warm enough to comfortably work in here for long periods of time. June to the end of September are best.

The Gallery is open to the shop and the street. It has baseboard heat. The Gallery has a vaulted ceiling and wall space for displaying art or it can be used as a work space. There are stained glass windows and gallery lighting throughout the space.

The Tools

There is a full set of woodshop tools large and small, several work benches and tables, a kiln and wheel, pottery tools, stained glass tools, several easels, a drafting table, several sewing forms and a sewing machine and thread, industrial pots and stove.
