Sointula Art Shed

The Sointula Art Shed artist residency (est. 2013) is located in Sointula BC, a small coastal fishing village in the unceded territories of the ‘Namgis, Mamalilikala, and Kwakiutl Nations. Its place name in Kwak’wala is Tłatłaskudis, which means “seaward opposite beaches”. The village of Sointula was founded in 1901 by a group of Finnish socialist utopian settlers, who gave it the name Sointula, meaning “place of the chord” or “place of harmony”.  A couple more good words to know in this region are Gilakas'la, which means both "welcome" and "thank you" in Kwak'wala, and Kiitos, which means "thank you" in Finnish.
