Kanteles by Michael Denman, Window gallery July 2018. Michael lives in Mitchell Bay here on Malcolm Island, where he builds all sorts of lovely things, like these kanteles. Kantele is a wooden stringed instrument, whose origin is written about in the Kalevala, and it's the national instrument of Finland. Michael makes his kanteles using all locally sourced cedar and yew wood - they are beautiful, and will be up in our Window Gallery for the next couple of weeks, along with the pieces of a kantele in progress. We read that there is a kantele resurgence in Finland, including electric kanteles that are popular with Finnish heavy metal musicians.
